As we move through the Fall fashion week season, the best backstage snippets are collected and curated by magazines like Vogue, giving us an inside look at the inner mechanics of the fashion show. It's hard to remember a time before we could gush over candid photography of the models and designers teeming with excitement before the shows. This very special, vulnerable look into the world of fashion is all thanks to the ubiquitous four-decade career of Roxanne Lowit.
Looking back one year after her passing on September 13th, 2022, the loss of this fashion photography icon is keenly felt. Starting in the late 70s, Lowit was able to slip past the conventions of photography and artifice in the runway environment, exposing a side of fashion that was both imperfect and glamorous. Described as unimposing but unapolagetically herself, Lowit had a knack for drawing out trust from the models and designers, giving her the opportunity to document something the world had never seen from the industry. Where others had put up facades and caricatures in order to play their roles in the system, Lowit brought a disarming truthfulness, showing that real personality is powerfully refreshing.
